5 Days and 2,480 Kilometer Later

07/06/2013

Luzern Swiss

2 weeks ago – me, my wife, my sister in law and a nephew went for a roadtrip. My wife not really keen on going because she is not well and it is a long 2480km journey crossing 4 countries and 10 cities. But, promised have been made to our guest months earlier – and its must be kept.

So the journey begins – with caution!

Day 1 – 23rd May (Frankfurt – München – Salzburg) 560km

It tooks me a while to wrote this and it is gonna be long. So please bear with me.

We begin our journey at 9.00 am. Cruising the highway hoping to enjoy a beautiful scenery – but the thick cloud and gloom weather make it impossible.

1. MUNICH, Germany

Arrived München (Munich) passed lunch time. Stop at the Allianz Arena (Bayern München Stadium), Hard Rock Cafe to buy some shirts and stroll around town.

allianz arena

hrc munich

München

That is it. Nothing much we do in Munich, it is totally a passed by city.

The journey continues to Salzburg. Another one hour and half driving.

2. SALZBURG, Austria

Reached Salzburg at almost 4.00pm – checked in the hotel and quickly went out to the old town. My sister in law wanna have a quick tour on the famous The Sound of Music film location.

Salzburg almost sunset

Luckily it is summer time. The sun still shines (even covered by the thick cloud) until 9.00pm. So we have ample time to stroll around. Since this our second time here..for the same purposes, me and wife just laid back and enjoy the sunset. Read and see photos of our first trip to Salzburg here.

We had dinner at almost 9.00pm at a chinese restaurant. There is no choice for us since all shops and restaurant already closed by 8.00.

We retired the night at almost 12 and I got a long day tomorrow. A good sleep is all I hope.

Day 2 – 24th May (Salzburg – Venice – Treviso) 620km

Checked-out from the hotel at 8.00am and drive to Mirrabel’s Garden – One of the The Sounds of Music film location appear in Do RE MI songs that we’re not able to visit yesterday. Spend about an hour there and then continue to Hellbruns Palace for another site of the film’s location- the famous gazebo for the Sixteen Going on Seventeen song.

Once done – I am all set to have a long 5 hours drive from Salzburg to Venice. A scenic drive through tunnels and regions of mountains keep everyone happy. We stopped a few times to enjoy the scenery and of course to refresh. Lucky enough for my two guest – while passing the mountain’s highway, the car’s navigator shows snow warning – and somewhere 10 minutes later snows pouring on my windshield.

I stopped – giving a chance for my sis in law an nephew to have a real taste of snow. Indeed a very lucky day for them to experience snows in summer at the most beautiful place.

Journey continues and we crossing the Italian border at half past four.

3. TREVISO, Italy

Quite surprising, that the feeling of driving in Malaysia came into my sense. Been driving in Germany, Austria, Holland with a no-toll highway is become normal for me after 2 years here. Suddenly got into Italy with all-toll highway and the quality of road – uneven and potholes everywhere is shocking. The scenery in northern part of Italy is almost the same like Malaysia, the building architecture, the house, the “kampung” is surely familiar. Too bad i cant show you any pictures since I am driving.

Reached Treviso after almost 7 hours journey (including stop and detour). Treviso is a small city 40 minutes away from Venice and it is kinda expensive to overnite in the famous city, so Treviso is a good choice to spend a nite. So we checked in.

We continue to Venice 30 minutes later after everybody is freshen up.

4. VENICE, Italy

Like I said before, it took us about 40 minutes drive to reach beautiful Venice. It is indeed a beautiful city. Since there is no car can get in the city, we parked and walk.

venice venice2

fridge magnet

Walk across the town to the San Marco Square is like navigating yourself through a maze. It is very confusing and indeed we lost a couple time. Finally reached San Marco Square at almost sunset. The water rises fast and the square is flooded in just 15 minutes.

san marco

san marco2

When we finally reached San Marco (about an hour walked) everybody is tired, so I decided to take a ferry back to the car. It is not an option to walk back through the maze of Venice small streets and bridges and would spend another hour.

The ferry here is just like a train in other European city. The same concept, the same function, the same time table and schedule to keep and quite the same ticketing system. We board the ferry and after 13 station and 30 minutes later we arrived safely where we started.

It is a must in my opinion to have pasta and pizza in Italy – so we head to a restaurant and had our pizza, pasta and some seafood. When the bills comes up – we have to forked out a 100Euro plus tips(RM400) for 4 plates of meals and 4 glasses of drinks. It is indeed very expensive. We can have the same meals in Germany for half the price.

We retired the day when we reached hotel at 10.30pm.

Day 3 – 25th May (Treviso – Verona – Monza – Milan) 420km

The weather is still gloom when we left Treviso for Verona. It is an hour and half driving to the city of love – where Romeo and Juliet were told in Shakespeare’s classic.

5. VERONA, Italy

There is thousands of visitors flocking into this small town to have a glimpse at Verona’s house and the famous balcony. I bet some of you guys ever watch the movie called “Letters to Juliet” starring Amanda Seyfried. The location (the balcony) depicted in the movie is the same – but i bet the production has it constructed in the studio. Or else they have to close the place for the shooting and remove all signage, love padlocks, wall message and everything. But I think, it is much cheaper and practical to build a set in a studio.

We left Verona for Monza by noon – another 2 hours drive.

6. MONZA, Italy

Monza is a city 30 minutes away from Milan. Staying here is cheaper than in Milan itself. After all, being a Formula 1 fan, I would love to see the Monza iconic race circuit which is only 3km from the hotel.

monza autodrome

Checked in at the hotel at almost 4pm and then straight to Milan.

7. MILAN, Italy

It was raining when we reached Milan. Strolled around Piazza del Duomo (Cathederal Square) or Squares of the Duomo and then let ourselves in to the believe to be one of the oldest shopping mall in the world – Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. It is a huge glass-roofed shopping arcade lined with expensive shops, bars, and restaurants. Built in 1867, it links the squares of the Duomo and La Scala.

duomo square

Galleria Vittorio

The ladies took their time to do some shopping while me waiting at the front door watching people and enjoying ice-cream. Being a fashion capital of the world – I expect to see brilliantly dressed guys and gals around town – but to my dissapointment, it just like strolling around another European city – just the same. Nothing (for me) is different about Milan.

I would say that i love Harajuku (Tokyo) better. It is Japan’s best city for fashion. You can see varieties of fashion people wore  on the streets that you never expect to see..and it is really fun and entertaining. Unlike Harajuku, Milan is only the city for big brands and designers to show-off. Thats what I think.

We then proceed back to Monza quickly because I need to reached the hotel before 8pm. The live football match between Bayern München and Borrusia Dortmund on tv is going to take place later and we have dinner in room.

The next morning – we left Italy for Switzerland. Closer to home.

Day 4 – 26th May (Milan – Como – Lucerne – Titisee) 460km

Luckily it was a bright shiny day when we left Milan for Lucerne. It is another long drive – but it is worth it. We gotta drive thorough mountain pass which reward us with a beautiful scenery.

It is abour one and half hour later when we passed Lake Como.

8. COMO, Italy

We just passed by and enjoy the beautiful scenery. How I wish I could live here in this very beautiful place near the lake and high up in the mountain.

lake como italy lake como

Lake Como is the home of Superstar. Many Hollywood’s actor and actress live here or at least have a property here. So does the great and successful sportsmen – everybody wanna have a home here.

So am I.

Enough with Italy – we crossed Switzerland border some 15 minutes later. Gotta pay the toll of 40 Swiss Franc (about 38 Euro). You will get the toll sticker to put on your car’s windshield and can drive around Switzerland for a year for free.

Driving experience will totally change when entering Switzerland. Beautiful scenery, beautiful road surface and a good speed limit to maintain at 130 kmph. It took us 2 hours and 45 minutes after entering several tunnels, including one of the longest in the world (the third actually after Norway and China) at 17km long – the longest I ever drive through. I should try Norway’s and China’s next.

san gottardo pass

We reached Lucerne at lunch time.

9. LUCERNE, Switzerland

A very beautiful small city by the Lucerne Lake – we spent just about 2 hours in Lucerne – stroll around, took pictures and had kebab for lunch.

Lake Lucerne Swiss Lucerne Luzern Swiss

Done with Lucerne. We quickly left Lucerne for Zurich – A city border to Germany. It is only 55 km from Lucerne and took us about 1 hour to reach there.

10. ZURICH, Switzerland

It is almost 4pm when I am still trying to find a parking spot. Out of sudden, my wife wanted to have rice for dinner and she said there is one good Singaporean Restaurant there where we could have nasi goreng and stuff. So i drove there – and get whatever she wishes. Once done, I drove to the town centre, found a parking sport and then we walked to the Zurich Lake about 20 minutes walk from where we parked. As usual (from my several trips here before) we stroll around the canals and lake then stopped for a good cup of coffee. Thats it. After all, the weather is not good tho. Its gloom and rainy.

zurich1 zurich2

At 6 pm we proceed back to Germany and stopped in the Black Forest – the famous forest in the world and the home of Cuckoo Clock.

It is a 1 hour and 45 minutes drive from Zurich. Driving into the thick mountains range at 960 meter from the sea level and caught up with snows at the peak its kinda scary. Reached Titisee at almost 8pm. It is still bright tho, but we are too tired to go around town – just check in the hotel, had our nasi goreng tapau from Zurich and had a good nite sleep.

Day 5 – 27th May (Titisee Neustadt – Wertheim – Frankfurt) 420km

11. TITISEE NEUSTADT, Black Forest, Germany

Titisee or Lake Titi is one of a small town scattered around Schwarzwald (Black Forest). The main city is Freiburg, which I must detour if I wanted to go there. So I just sticked to Titisee, a small town in the Black Forest.

After breakfast at the hotel, went out to the town to see the lake and my sister bought some souvenirs – a cuckoo clock which she bought at Euro345.

titisee titisee2

cuckoo clock

We then proceed to Werthein Village – A Factory Outlet which is 300km from Titisee heading toward Frankfurt. My sister in law never really had a chance to go shopping so I promised to stop at Wertheim.

12. WERTHEIM, Germany

It is a small town which  is popular for its Chic Factory Outlet chain of shop all over the world. So it is already noon when we reached there after a grueling 3 and half hour drive from Titisee.

wertheim village

I dont know what those ladies really bought – but one things for sure, it is handfull. The car’s boot is fulled.

We drove back to Frankfurt at 3.15pm and reached home at 4.30pm. Unload all stuff and I alone quickly drove the car back to the airport. It is a rented car, which i forgot to tell you, which we rented at Euro260 for 5 days. Its a brand new car which only clocked 480km on her mileage when i first took out from the parking lot. When i returned, it shows 2,960km on its odometer. We must have travel 2,480 kilometre for that 5 days. Wow!

So, After 5 days, 2,480 kilometre and 1,000Euro later – we reached home. Safe and sound.

Will you drive that far? ENTAHLAH, I Dont Know. But I do hope you will because it’s worthy.

Sorry lambat balas sebab komen you masuk dalam spambox.

    1. Soalan saya – kereta sewa tu ada restricted mileage tak? Sila pastikan yer takut2 ada had km yg dibenarkan.
    2. Brussels – Essen : Kenapa tak lalu or singgah Antwerp? dah pass by tu so saya cadangkan singgah sekejap makan kat KL Restoran.
    3. Yang lain2 tu saya rasa dah ok.
    4. Pesanan saya – pandu berhati2 dan ikut speed limiter yer. Kalau kat dlm Germany, if speed limiter is off sila pecut. Kalau kat negara lain max speed is 130kmph.
    5. Have fun!

Mmg berbaloi walaupun jarak yg jauh

Dulu tertanya2 juga kenapa dinamakan Black Forest, tapi bila dah tgk depan mata sendiri betapa rapatnya antara satu pokok dgn satu pokok tumbuh hingga takde ruang utk cahaya masuk, barulah tahu

Teringin nak tour europe lagi cover mana yg tak sempat nyinggah dulu, tapi tak tahu bila hehe

Aidil,

nak tanya lagi, ada spesific website tak untuk cek train ticket kat swiss ni? and perhaps untuk UK as well..and by the way ada suggestion tak kalau nak tengok view yg cantik kat southern england ? im staying at Canterbury for a week there and the only suggestion yg kawan saya bagi is Dover since dia pun baru kat sana 🙂

      11/11/2014 at 3:22 pm

      Aidil,

      1. Website utk beli tiket keretapi switzerland – http://www.sbb.ch

Lagi satu, sepanjang tuan drive travel europe ni, local police akan kacau tak bila dia tengok foreigner macam kita ni drive?

    Fazley,

    Hello Janzty,

You cannot pass by Blackforest because its a long way round. Black Forest, Germany is in the west and Salzburg is in the east. The easiest is to drive to Salzburg first then drive to Munich and then to Freiburg or Titisee of Blackforest from there.

Or else, you can drive like I do – from Venice to Milan to Zurich then to Blackforest. After that then you go to Salzburg.

    Dear Janzty,

    No problems :).

Venice is an island which divided by canal and thats make hundred of island in an island. So i would call it a group of island which only one big island is allowed for land vehicle.

From the mainland you will be driving on a long bridge to go the island and when you arrived theres will be many buildings like shopping complexes, shops etc and also public parking. So you can choose to park anywhere you want. If you plan to overnite, then better park in any indoor parking space. The charge would be around €35-€40 for 24 hours.

Then from the parking lot you have to walk to get in the old venice.

Salam, its a great adventure and that's really encouraging me for my next trip to Euro in next June. But plan to rent a car from Paris and then to Brussels next to Frankfurt and (start follow your route) and come back from Switzerland to Paris.

Just to know, is that enough for 6 days. And one more, if possible, can you suggest which car rental company that you prefer to?
Thank you in advance for your support.

    Puan Nor,

 1. Munich – Allianz Arena, Marienplatz & Glockenspiel, Viktualienmarkt
    2. Salzburg – Salzburg Old Town, Mirrabel Garden
    3. Venice – San Marco Square
    4. Interlaken – Jungfraujoch, Einstein House, Lake Brienz
    5. Lucerne – Mt Titlis, Lake Lucerne
    6. Zurich – Old Town, Uetliberg, Zurich Lake

Harap maklum. Terima kasih.

salam tuan..nak tanya. bpe sume kos fuel n toll utk trip tuan tu jerman, austria, italy n swiss?

            Khairul Abdullah
            23/10/2015 at 10:35 pm

            Waalaikumsalam,

Jadi buatlah lebih sikit to be save dan anggarkan sekitar 160-170liter.

            6. Google tgk berapa harga petrol atau diesel kat europe sekarang. Katakanlah €1,20 utk setiap liter maka 160X€1.20 = €192. Jadi buatlah budget utk petrol sekitar €250 utk selamat. Senang kan?

            7. Pasal tol pulak, kat Germany takde tol.

Good luck and all the best.

We initially planned to drive then considered taking the rail global pass 2 months continuos. Tapi masih planning stage ni.
But after reading your article, I think I will opt for driving with certain legs by train.
Most welcome your advise on this! , to help us plan better, budget pun taklah tinggi sangat.

Saya telah membaca kebanyakan penulisan Tuan termasuk buku I’m A Backpacker : Europe dan mendapat banyak info.
