Sind Sie von Malaisie? Ja! Ich bin – What is That All About?

04/01/2012

What is that all about?

I went out this morning to the bank to settle down some banking issue. When everything is in order then i make a move to Hugendubel, the largest bookstore in Frankfurt and grab myself 2 classic novel by Charles Dickens, Great Expectation and Oliver Twist. I always fancy classical novel especially by Jules Verne and Dickens himself.

Charles Dickens Oliver Twist & The Great Expectation

Remember to get myself some baguette (a french stick/bread) make me walk to Rewe ( pronounce “rghiver” a grocery store just like Cold Storage) to find one and i do grab a pack of salad for my lunch.

books, baguette and salad

Walking home by the walkway then someone suddenly look at me and asked “Sind Sie von Malaisie?” “Ja! ich bin” i reply in my broken German. He asked me whether I’m from Malaysia and Yes i said.

“How do you know that I’m Malaysian? Is it written on my forehead? the latter i asked quietly in my head.

“You look like Malaysian” he said to me and “now you live here in Germany?” he continued asking me.

“Yes I am” i do answer. “And you have been to Malaysia? i did ask him back.

“No! I have only been to Thailand” he calmly reply and left me.

Errr…and i walk home wondering…”what is that all about?”

    Rayyan,

I admit that…but we malaysian can easily distinguish whether someone is thais, indon, pinoy, vietnamese and etc. But here in Germany, even i myself cannot differentiate between malay, indon and thais here, they look the same. But for a guy who only been to Thailand and telling me that im a malay..and just walk off is a bit weird. (He do not look like a backpackers to me tho..). I bet he got friends here which is malaysian. I met a lot of deutcher here and they cant never tell me where im from and they barely know about malaysia.

KA,
Kalau tak silap, masa mula2 sampai di German, KA kata tak tahu berbahasa German kan? Berani sungguh ye! So, macam mana boleh pandai sekarang? Adakah attend formal class atau sekadar pergaulan seharian je? Senang ke belajar bahasa German? Rasa2 macam susah sbb spelling & sebutan berbeza.

    Twin,

Pandai tu tidak, cuma boleh ler cakap sikit2. To sit down and have a full conversation in deutsch still tak pandai 🙂

I attend a short course for 4 months and the rest is practise, practise and practise.

Yang jadi payahnya adalah kerana kita tend to pronounce it according to english. contohnya perkataan “Absolute” sekiranya kita yg di didik dgn bahasa inggeris akan menyebut “eb se lut” tetapi sebutan deutsch adalah baku iaitu “ab so lu te”. Ini kerana huruf A B C di dalam deutsch tidak berbunyi “Eh” “Bee” “See” tetapi “Ahh” “Bey” “Say” “Day” “Eh” “Eff” “Gay” “Ha” dan seterusnya.
